A few months ago, luxury footwear and accessories brand, Mary Ching, opened its doors on Jumen Lu. AnyWearStyle stopped in to chat with creative director and founder, Alison Mary Ching Yeung, to get the low down on the new studio.
Split between two floors, the sprawling Mary Ching studio is filled with bric-a-brac of porcelain, Chinese decorative flourishes, exotic skins, and surprisingly- graffiti. The mix is anything but wallflower; eclectic, eccentric and opulent, this vibrant space is the brand come to life. "It's a good way to create the world of Mary Ching. This is like a creative hub." explains Yeung.
Devoted to work, the second floor opens into the corporate portion of the space. Work desks, samples, and mood boards skirt along alternating walls all painted Mary Ching purple. Taking centre stage, a large circle of shoes pays homage to heels. Nearby, a sitting area beckons with an artfully stacked, makeshift magazine coffee table.
Continuing up, the third floor is the highlight of the studio. Used for entertaining, "The Great Wall of Mary Ching" greets guests along with a custom-made, dining table supported by colourfully clad mannequin legs. Commissioning graffiti artists Brand Fury (Tommy Tam), Smear, Mike and Tsol, two full length walls are canvased with a nearby scattering of chairs. Saucily enough, a few flags are sprayed with messages like "God save MARY CHING". The choice of medium is unusual, but the effect is high octane, bold and refreshingly unique and instinctively chosen, Yeung jokes "What can I say? I am a genius in disguise!" Next door, playful elements are used throughout a sitting room. Fedora ceiling lamps hang from the ceiling wallpapered in Shanghai Fashion maps while a plastic posterior parks near a sofa ready to receive weary feet. Throughout, orchids are scattered in to symbolize the sexuality of the brand.
Utilizing furniture already owned, street finds, with self-customization and items found from Taobao, Yeung has designed a space that showcases creative flair. "My philosophy is very much not to take yourself too seriously, and make the most of what you can pull together from your surroundings. I had a clear idea in my mind and worked from that." The wild combinations work. A bevy of private events have already been attracted to the studio,- from birthday parties, to wine tastings. Currently entering an expansion phase (slippers, handbags and accessories were recently introduced) the studio is one worth watching.
